Road Trip!!!

I just returned from an impromptu family road trip to Portland! It was great. We stayed at the wonderful Kennedy School, visited the epic Powell's Books, and did a little thrift store shopping! Here is a peak at our adventures! (all images were taken on my iPhone 4)

Snowpocalypse 2012

So, for those of you who don't live in Seattle, let me enlighten you on a little know fact. We can't deal with weather. Any weather, really. It rains all the time, and yet every time it rains it messes up traffic. We complain that our summer's are cold, and then complain of "heat waves" when the mercury goes above 80 degrees. But most of all, we can't handle snow. The city literally shuts down at the mere threat of it. On Tuesday of this week, our public schools started two hours late because an "Arctic Storm" was coming. We woke on Tuesday to dry streets and clear skies, but took our kids to school two hours late nonetheless. While they were in school it did start to snow... a little. That is when I took these first few pictures. I'm lucky enough to live close to a beach and wanted to get some images of the storm over the water as it hit. Sadly, I was unable to spend much time shooting, as the school district decided to close school two hours early.... sigh.

Later Tuesday night, the snow did come in ernest. We received six inches where I live, which is a very big deal. The boys have been home from school, my husband has been home from work, and we've all been having a ton of fun! Today it's raining, and all the snow will be gone by tomorrow morning. But this storm will no doubt go down in Seattle weather lore as The Great Snowpocalypse of 2012!

Family Photography 101

Okay… I’m doing it! My first ever photography workshop just for moms and dads!!

What it is: A four-hour workshop all about how to get great everyday photos of your kids. We’ll cover photography basics like understanding light, composition and proper exposures. As well as some kid basics, like what works best with what age, and how to bend a toddler to your will!! And after I’ve taught you all my tricks, I’ll turn you loose on our child models so that you can practice what you’ve learned.

I’ll also feed you! How great is that!?

What it is not: This is not a class for professional photographers. This is a class for real people taking everyday portraits. Talk of F-stops and apertures will be replaced by easy tips on how to get great photos without heavy technical know-how. So please do not feel like you have to own a fancy camera to attend. Whatever camera you have will work, be it your Cannon Mark II, your old Olympus point and shoot, or your iPhone. As long as you can learn the basics, you can take a beautiful picture!

What is the price for such a fantastic day of learning? $250

I love watching you guys grow your learning and stretching how your tiny bodies change from chubby little hands to muscly looking arms as you strain to climb just a little higher finally conquering your favorite “climbing tree” out front. I love how your words and questions turn clearer and make more sense with every passing day. I look forward to the times when you come home for the holidays and we can sit and talk about anything. everything. You’re my little men and for now those conversations are more a picture of snuggling, tickling and lots and lots of giggles and kisses. I love these moments and soaking them up as much as I possible can cause I know the day is coming when I’ll stand in the driveway watching you pull away fighting back the tears cause I know how much I’ll miss you, till you’re home for Christmas.

The Cromwell Family

The Cromwells have been coming to me since my "studio" was a small room in my small house with a piece of polar fleece tacked to one of the walls for a backdrop. And that my friends, was a very long time ago!

We go way back.

And in all those years, I don't think we have ever, EVER, had a sunny day for a photo-shoot. It always rains on us... always!! So we were all stunned that today was sunny and warm and just an absolutely gorgeous day!

This one day only event will take place at my Greenwood studio on Saturday Oct. 1st from 9:00 to 4:00. Pup portraits are $100 a session, or $150 for Pups with their Peeps. The session fee includes a twenty minute studio shoot, and an online gallery to share with family and friends. If you're thinking, "But wait, I want a CD of my images... and maybe a beautiful fine art album that holds 12 custom 4x6 prints! If only!!" First Day of Kindergarten!!!!

Well, today was a big day! This morning I dropped my two little men off at kindergarten. Yes, I cried. No, they didn't. At one point, Harvey looked at me and said "you can go now Mommy".

I can not believe that the past five years have gone by so fast! I feel like they were just born! And while I'm excited to see what this next chapter will bring, I must admit, that I'm a little lonely at the moment, writing this in my very quiet house!

I can't wait to pick them up from school and hear how the day went!

As for me, I'm off to the studio to photograph a set of newborn twins. Let's hope I don't sob through the entire shoot!!!

Superheroes!!!

So, for the past several weeks, my son Harvey has been transforming himself into a superhero he calls "The Green Rescue". The Green Rescue is the most super of all the superheroes (according to Harvey) and fights off bad guys with his magical shield (an orange plastic tray), but also has all the powers of every other superhero out there. Pretty amazing, I know!! Not to be outdone, his twin brother Dexter has become the "Lego Rescue" This crime fighting duo made their way (with some help from their mom... who they now call "Tape Lady"... not sure why) to Seattle's Discovery Park yesterday. Luckily "Tape Lady" brought her camera, and was able to document some of the action!

Well I had a fantastic weekend of shooting! I can't wait to share it all with you.

On Saturday, I had the great pleasure of photographing the 60th birthday party of Rosanne Ross.

This amazing party was held at the beautiful Bellevue Club, and co-ordinated by the talented Katy Griffiths of Vows: Wedding and Event Planning. Every thing about this event was superb! The styling was just perfect, but what really made this party outstanding was the people. I was so charmed by the Ross family and their friends. A truly lovely group!

You may recognize the pug photos that were used for table numbers from the pug shoot I did back in June. I think they looked great!!

It's so easy to get caught up in it all. This summer, I've been making a effort to slow down, especially with my kids. Exciting news! This September 19th and 20th, I have decided to once again don my teaching cap, and will be hosting a workshop in beautiful Seattle Washington.

If you are ready to take your maternity photography to the next level, then this workshop is for you!

On day one we will cover everything you've ever wanted to know about how to shoot beautiful, emotional, and (most of all) flattering maternity portraits. I'll demonstrate poses that look great on every woman, instruct on how to get the most out of your couples and families, and go over how to best use available light to enhance your maternity portraits. Attendees will get plenty of hands-on practice with live modes, as well as one-on-one instruction time.

There will also be plenty of time for Q&A and trouble shooting common problems that arise when working with maternity clients.

Day two we will cover business models specific to maternity photography. I will tell you how I went from shooting one or two maternity portraits a month to over two hundred a year, and let you in on my post production techniques, marketing strategies, packaging and pricing.

We will end the day with portfolio sharing and critique.

I'll be shooting a 60th birthday party in August for a lady who loves her pugs!! Her son's, together with the amazing Katy Griffiths of VOWS: Wedding and Event Planning, came up with the awesome idea to use photographs of her beloved dogs as the table numbers for the event. Brilliant!!! So today, we had our Pug shoot. And let me tell you... it was a blast!!!! We got great photos of the dogs and their numbers, as well as some of the behind the scenes shenanigans.

Here's the deal friends.... I'm obsessed with the camera on my Iphone. Seriously. I just love it! I love that it's always with me. I love that it makes capturing the wonderfully mundane and beautiful moments of day to day life so easy! I love that it makes me look and notice what is around me!! It's just great! And I never want to be with out it.

I've recently joined Instagram, which has only fueled my obsession. I'm truly blown away by the gorgeous work that is being made out there!!! It's so inspiring!

The Clinick Family

So, the Clinicks have been coming in to see me since my studio was one tiny little room in my tiny little house. That my friends, was a long time ago. Now look at them!! All grown up. Amazing!

It was great seeing them all, and we had a fantastic time at beautiful Gasworks park. Here is a little peek from our shoot.

Friday morning was cold and rainy. It felt like September, and I was not happy about it. I'll admit it... I was feeling a little cranky. But then, little Miss Lilah came in and turned it all around. She is just the cutest little thing, and instantly snapped me out of my bad mood. I particularly love her little Ester Williams inspired swim wear.... hilarious!!!

The Bachmeier Family in Sunny Seattle!

This is the adorable Bachmeier family. It seems that for the past three years or so, every time they've come in for a photo session it has rained cats and dogs. So we were all very excited to see some sunshine this year! We went to Seattle's beautiful Gasworks Park for their shoot. It was great!

This is Graham. You may recognize him from the photo slideshow on this blog, and from my website. I work with him every year, and have been doing so for a long time now. Building relationships with the families and children I work with is one of the most rewarding things about my job. I love watching these little people grow up!! Lucky me!! And Graham is one of my favorites! He's always so much fun to work with! I'm already looking forward to next year.

Over the past two weeks, there has been a steady stream of adorable babies making their way into my studio. It's kind of great. So I've decide that this week's blog posts will be a virtual cute baby parade!! Cute babies all week... you lucky people!!!

This adorable little one totally stared me down her entire shoot. It was kind of funny. I can't decide if she thought I was interesting, or if she was just giving me the stink eye. Isn't she the cutest!

The Jobe Family

This is Ava. She and her family come in a least once a year for photos. I adore her. Yesterday, she brought me a beautiful picture that she drew, and told me that I was "the nicest girl EVER!" She's awesome.

This year, Ava was joined by her brother Rex. And let me tell you. This little guy is every bit as adorable as his big sister. Check out his cute little tooth!!! LOVE!

I'm all ready looking forward to seeing them all again in the fall.

Film... the Sequel

I posted some film photos of my boys a couple of weeks ago. I had so much fun shooting it again, and got such an enthusiastic response from the photos I posted, that I decide to shoot a little bit more. This time I took it in studio.

These wonderful people were kind enough to let me experiment a bit at their family photo session. It was fun, and I love the way they turned out.

Now I'm wondering if there are others out there who, like me, love the grain and texture of film, and who've missed it. I'm thinking about offering it as an add on to my summer sessions.... Would love to hear your thoughts.

The DeLances! I shot their amazing wedding in Maui about two years ago (one of the photos from that gorgeous wedding was featured in Seattle Bride back in January). Since then they've had two beautiful children. The newest little DeLance is just two weeks old. I was so looking forward to meeting her, and, as always, had a wonderful time working with them all!!!
